Irish Education minister Ruairi Quinn today announced the industry's first MSc and BSc in Cloud Computing at the Cork Institute of Technology. One of the main reasons for launching the program is to build a new skillset for what could be thousands of jobs in the country:
This government has already identified Cloud Computing as a key driver for growth and jobs. Cloud computing is the future of technology and is likely to revolutionise the operation of businesses in Ireland if we grasp its potential. This announcement by EMC and Cork Institute of Technology is very timely as the students who sign up for these degrees will be in a position to lead Ireland’s development as an international Cloud Computing Centre of Excellence. The programmes being launched today are a model of best practice of the kind of engagement and innovative delivery that the new National Strategy for Higher Education demands.
My own company (EMC) is heavily involved with the generation of the curriculum, along with Cisco, VMware, RSA, SpringSource, Microsoft, and Greenplum.
What I find most interesting about the announcement is that the momentum for this idea came about as a result of EMC's yearly employee survey. Jackie Murphy, Learning and Development Manager, explains:
This idea came about after analyzing results from the ESMS survey that the Ireland COE conducted in 2009. Employees told us they wanted to develop new skills to meet their career aspirations. They also recognized a lack of knowledge in key areas of the business, particularly in cloud computing. They asked for training and development opportunities to bring their skills up to the next level.
As for the curriculum itself, it calls for a mix of classroom and practical experience. Upon completion of the requirements, employees will receive either a BSc in Computing (Level 7) or a BSc in Cloud Computing (Level 8). A Masters-level program is currently under development and will be available to Ireland COE employees and through remote delivery. The remote delivery is key, given the level of interest in the Russia, Israel, and Egypt COEs.
The program will commence in September 2011.
